Have You Sqeezed Your Melons Give-away

Time for a give-away! Anybody up for one??? As you know, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. While I am very fortunate and have not had to suffer the horror of this disease I have experienced the fear of being called back for a more thorough "look". The results have been favorable but the suspect areas are being closely monitored each year. Every year, I have diagnostic mammograms rather than routine screenings. On Wednesday, I will be going for my annual exam. While no one likes to get their jugs squashed, I cannot stress the importance of having this done. I admit, I hate going. Hate it with a passion. And for whatever reason, it has nothing to do with the discomfort of the exam...I'm one of the lucky ones and have never found it to cause much discomfort. My problem is I sometimes like to live in denial. I subscribe to the old adage "what I don't know can't hurt me". But ladies, this is one time where what you don't know can kill you!!! In addition to mammograms, it is so important to perform self-exams. Knowing your own body is the quickest way to ensure early detection of irregularities. I will not lie to you, I'm not the most diligent with this. But times are a changin' and I'm now making it a priority.

As with any give-away, there is usually something asked of you. This is no different. Here are the details:

1. Perform a self breast exam. That's right...sqeeze your own melons so to speak. HERE is a link explaining how to do this in 5 simple steps.

2. Leave me a comment saying "I've squeezed my melons".

That's it. Rather simple. I would also like to encourage you to continue with your self-exams and if you are of the age, be sure and schedule your mammogram. I would also love it if you would please pass the message on. I'm not requiring it for the give-away, just making a kind request. You have until the 31st to leave a comment then I will randomly select a winner on November 1st. I'll be back later with a photo of what's up for grabs. I can promise you it will be worth the effort of a little squeeze!

Hugs,
L

  1. Although i think the language in this post is funny, it is about a no-laughing matter!! I totally agree with the importance of doing monthly self exams and keeping up to date with appointments! I had a scare with cells on my ovary when I was pregnant with Izzy and I know the importance of getting my yearly pap no matter how much I hate it!! Especially when it can potentially save your life! I will go "squeeze my melons" and when I make my next post, I will be sure to pass this info on:) Love, Jess

  2. That is so generous of you in so many ways! Thank you for reminding me to do myself an auto exam. I smiled when I saw the title of this blog, sqeeze my melon! Actualy, mine or more of lemon, but they are there. I ounce had a mamogramme and with my lemons, it was very painful, hard to reach and put them on the plate if you know what I mean. The doctor I have now, he says only when I reach 50, then I will have a mamogram on regular bases, for now, he does the exam in his office.

  8. Alrighty tootsie, I just squeezed my melons! I have the fibercystic ones...Breast cancer awareness is a big priority in my bra! My mom is like you, close eye always in one area. Her oldest sister just had a biopsy and we're waiting on results. You've probably already read it by now. Thanks for the reminder. And, as I've turned 40, I need to go THIS MONTH and have my exam. Thanks girlfriend!

  13. I had mine squeezed 2 weeks ago and then got the call for an ultra sound, the found something this past Wednesday and made me wait until yesterday to tell me "it seems to be a 2 cm cyst and we would like to get another ultrasound in 6 months but in the mean time we can drain it" Let me tell you what I think of the "it seems so be a cyst" my dear friend was told that over 2 years ago because she was only 27, next thing me know she had breast cancer and a year ago this month at the age of 29 had a double mastectomy, so for this week since tomorrow is my Princess' 6'th birthday I am going to run with that answer and be happy but next week I will make an appointment with a SPECIALIST and make sure that it is only a cyst because my baby girls need their mama to raise them to be the wonderful women they are meant to be.
Sorry for the looooong post but I needed to vent : )
You will be in my thoughts tomorrow and I am sending you positive vibes!!!
    (((((BIG hugs)))))

  15. Oh! Lisa...you have such a way with words!! But you are so right, this is sooo important & no joke! In the UK can you believe we do not have an annual screening programme for under 50's...unless of course you have private health cover & arrange it yourself.

Having had a non malignant 'lump' removed form my right breast when I was 20 years old, I remember the terror of waiting for results, not to mention signing the agreement for mastectomy if it was deemed necessary during surgery!! Needless to say, self examination has been second nature to me ever since!

God Bless you for spreading the word!!

  16. I squeezed mine and THEN SOME!!! LOL
Have you ever seen one of those silicone breast that they use for educating on what real lumps (that you should be worried about) should feel like? It is so neat. I saw one at a Crop for the Cure one year. It really showed me that I had NO IDEA what I was feeling for all those years before! lol

  17. I squeezed my melons!!! And just had a mammogram 3 weeks ago! I too hate it. Not the physical discomfort- the mental- worrying... and believe me, I'm really gifted in conjuring up terrifying outcomes! It is an insidious disease that two of my good friends have had, one beat it, and one did not; leaving behind two little girls. I am diligent about the mammo, not so much about the melon squeeze, but perhaps going forward I'll do better.

  21. Great idea Lisa, what a wonderful way of helping us girls to be aware of the danger. Sadly,, I don't need a reminder to squeeze my lemons, I do this regularly and have them checked by my specialist regularly as well. I've been living with cancer since I was little ... My mom got throat cancer when I was just 7 or 8 years old, recovered miraculously. She had breast cancer when I was in my early twenties, luckily they were able to cut it out and save her breast performing radiation ... and she was diagnosed with breast cancer on this very same breast again just last month. Again she was lucky, because of her annual check-ups the tumor was still very small, but had already grown a considerable amount when they did the biopsy several days later. The verdict was clear and frightening, a mastectomy was necessary. My mom again recovered again beautifully, and realizes that though she had the tough luck of getting cancer three times, she's also a three times cancer survivor! The thing that worries her more than her own condition is the possibility that I should get it. She made me promise to be on the lookout, which is why I squeeze my lemons on a regular basis! The fear is there though, can't deny that, no amount of squeezing takes that away.

  25. I have squeezed mine (and sometimes hubby's) and have also had my mammogram done this month. I had to have a few spots removed 2 years ago and they were benign but it was definitely scary. I go every year to have my melons squeezed. :)
